I should begin my post with a disclaimer; I have no problem whatsoever with the Christian religion or with any person who holds that faith as sacred. My issue lies solely with those who would use their political power to impose those beliefs on a society that may or may not accept the tenets of that religion. I am not anti-christian and any who would describe me as such would be guilty of slander. That said, let me begin to take Tom Delay apart.
The radical right wing "Christianistas" apparently have a new leader, the criminally indicted, disgraced, and resigned former Conressman, Tom Delay. Yesterday, Delay launched a new weblog, designed to compete with the Huffington Post, and I might add, this site as well. Delay's Christianistas believe that the government is not a secular institution, despite the admonitions of the U.S. Constitution. If Tom Delay can keep himself out of jail he will attempt to build a grass roots organization, much like moveon.org, to raise money for evangelical candidates who will use their political power to undermine Constitutional safeguards guaranteeing seperation of church and state. Delay and his cohorts would use their Congressional votes to stack the Federal Judiciary with like minded jurists who would overturn the rights of the citizenry to make decisions for themselves. They would impeach judges who did not agree with them and they would criminalize behaviors that they find personally offensive. We have examples all throughout history of the disastorous results of religion based Government, the Crusades of Medieval times, the Salem Witch Trials and if you need a modern example of Theocracy, I would refer your attention to the government of Iran. Tom Delay's thinking is disordered, that is why he is under criminal indictment in Texas. We must all do what we can to renounce his tacticts and his message.
