The victory last night of Lincoln Chafee in the Rhode Island Republican Primary is not the victory for the GOP that the media is spinning. It is instead an indication that the recent wave of ultra conservatism in our political system is dead. The Republican Party was forced, once again, to spend massive amounts of money to shore up the candidacy of an anti-Bush liberal against a Conservative who everyone knows they would much rather have had in that seat, Steve Laffey (R-Ri).
Like the battle between Ned Lamont (D-Ct) against Joe Lieberman (D-Ct) and the Republican candidate Schlessinger in Connecticut, the GOP pumped massive amounts of money and political support into the incumbent DEMOCRAT, abandoning totally their own Republican Candidate. These are indeed strange times in American politics, as well as a clear indication of how much trouble the Republican Party is in. Now, even if the Republicans hold a narrow margine in the Senate, there will be enough moderate Republicans seated in the Republican Caucus that the right wing extremists will not be able to get their un-American and Un-Constitutional legislation passed. It will also make it much harder for George W. Bush to continue stacking the Federal Courts with his own personal rubber stamps! |
