At a news conference from Camp David yesterday, George W. Bush, in his usual style, suggested that anyone who refuses to allow him to do anything he wants to do without regard to the law or the Constitution is ignorant. In his remarks to the press Bush said "Those who herald this decision simply do not understand the nature of the world in which we live,". Bush, who was reponding to a question from a reporter about yesterdays ruling from a Federal District Judge that held that the secret NSA program to wiretap telephones of American citizens without a warrant violates the 1st and 4th ammendments to the Constitution and the 1978 Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act.
Bush seems to believe that he and he alone is blessed with devine information that the rest of us just don't get. He further seems to believe that he and he alone has the authority to act on this divine guidance any way he sees fit. George W. Bush does not seem to care about the rule of law nor does he care about the U S Constitution... he believes that he is a power unto himself. We have had other Presidents who believed this as well but none of them has taken this doctrine of the "Unitary Executive" to the extremes that this President has. Most notably was Richard M. Nixon who said in 1974 to David Frost "If the Preident does it...then it is legal" as you recall shortly thereafter facing impeachment and removal from office Nixon resigned.
These self serving and insulting remarks by George W. Bush are very troubling and very Nixonian. To quote from a very obscure source "When the police break the law, then there is no law, just a struggle for survival" (Billy Jack). I ask you if Bush and the Republican power structure continue to tear down the laws and the Constitution, if they continue to breed disrespect for our institutions, our courts, our seperation of powers. If all people who disagree with him simply don't understand and are therefore releggated to irrelevence, then what kind of government will we have left?... A Democratic Republic or a fascist dictatorship?
We showed Richard Nixon the door...It's time to show W. the door also. |
